The paintings in Diana Copperwhite’s new exhibition combine the personal with the impersonal. Mostly the subjects’ heads are shown, as in Globe, above, but in some images, such as Parallel Universe, all we get is a television set in a room. The personal associations are not always immediately apparent — the television belongs to the artist’s mother. The best piece, Argentina, features a Velazquez-style figure, Copperwhite’s layering technique drawing attention to the way images — and by implication stories and personal identities — are built up bit by bit.
