In his new collection of film works, Brian Duggan sets his protagonist insurmountable challenges, including rock climbing, equipped with nothing but a white protective suit and a pair of sneakers. The greatest challenge, however, is finding an audience: projected in obscure corners of the IFSC’s Mayor Square, accidental discovery is unlikely. Which is a shame, as the films, with their comic commentary on leisure time, are directed at the corralled workforce. In addition, the vulnerable white figure, splashed against epic nature — blue skies, verdant greenery, vertical rock, above — is visually arresting in this antiseptic context. As sportswear has been appropriated by hip hop and pop stars, leisure time has become another commodity, something you buy rather than execute: Duggan’s futile exercises won’t keep audiences fit but are thoughtfully and visually playful.
