Arsenal (3-4-3)
Petr Cech, 6: Little chance with Moses’s goal. One nervous early moment when he raced out of his area and was forced to head the ball unconvincingly clear.
Rob Holding, 5: A fatal lapse in concentration allowed Moses to nip in behind him for the goal.
Per Mertesacker, 6: Typically solid in the air before he was forced off.
Nacho Monreal, 7: For a left back by trade, acquitted himself well when pressed into service in centre of a back three. Before that, linked well with Oxlade-Chamberlain. Scored in the shoot-out.
Héctor Bellerin, 5: Rusty. Perhaps lucky not to concede a penalty after giving possession away to Willian in his own area, and crossed poorly from good positions.

Mohamed Elneny, 7: Signs of developing a good partnership with Xhaka. Covered lots of ground and probably edged midfield battle with Kante and Fabregas in first half.
Granit Xhaka, 7: So much to admire in this performance: the industry, the way he dovetailed with Elneny, the long-range effort that tested Courtois, the assist for Kolasinac’s goal. But must cut out sloppy errors like the skied clearance from which Chelsea scored.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, 6: Probably Arsenal’s best performer in pre-season but erratic here. Gave the ball away cheaply on too many occasions. Solid penalty.
Danny Welbeck, 7: Bright and penetrative in inside-forward role, though should have done better with an early header from Xhaka’s pinpoint lofted pass.
Alexandre Lacazette, 6: Excellent exchange with Welbeck before hitting the post showed his quality, but drifted in and out of game somewhat.

Alex Iwobi, 8: Arsenal’s best player in first half. Demonstrated quick feet and an ability to burst deep into the penalty area.
Subs
Sead Kolasinac (for Mertesacker, 32) 7: Solid defensively and good going forward: made one bullocking run at heart of defence, and good header for the equaliser.
Olivier Giroud (for Lacazette, 66) 6: Not one of his better cameos from the bench. Offers Arsenal a different dimension but created little on this occasion. Tucked away the winning penalty with aplomb.
Theo Walcott (for Iwobi, 67) 6: Made little impact when he came on, but good penalty in the shoot-out.
Reiss Nelson (for Welbeck, 87) N/A

Thibaut Courtois, 6: Tipped away Iwobi’s dangerous cutback and made a fine fingertip save from Xhaka’s long-range shot. Probably won’t be taking a penalty in a shoot-out again.
César Azpilicueta, 5: Guilty of an uncharacteristic error when his dallying allowed Welbeck to pinch possession in a dangerous area.
David Luiz, 6: Allowed Iwobi to burst past him early on, but the nonchalant back-header to Courtois that drew gasps of appreciation from the Wembley crowd typified his calm assurance.
Gary Cahill, 7: Clever header to set up Moses’s goal, and discharged his defensive duties solidly. Good penalty in the shoot-out.

Victor Moses, 6: His end product from wide positions was generally poor but he took his goal well.
N’golo Kante, 7: A typical Kante performance: unflashy but influential. Won lots of possession and drove Chelsea forward from the base of midfield.
Cesc Fàbregas, 6: Excellent passing as usual but his lack of pace in central midfield left Chelsea exposed at times. Struggled to track Iwobi. Is he dynamic enough for a midfield two?
Marcos Alonso, 5: Not his best game. Found space well as ever but final product not up to his usual high standards.
Willian, 6: One superb crossfield pass to set up chance for Pedro and perhaps unlucky not to win a penalty when pouncing on Bellerin’s error but gave possession away too frequently.

Michy Batshuayi, 5: After a bright pre-season, a disappointing performance. Struggled to hold the ball up and generally kept quiet by Arsenal’s defenders.
Pedro, 5: Blotted his copybook with red-card challenge on Elneny. Arsenal scored from the subsequent free-kick. One excellent, burrowing run at heart of Arsenal defence.
Subs
Alvaro Morata (for Batshuayi, 74) 5: Hard to lead the line with ten men following Pedro’s dismissal. One nice flick-on just eluded Azpilicueta. Bad miss in the shoot-out.
Antonio Rüdiger (for Alonso, 79) 4: Lost Kolasinac for the equaliser.
Charly Musonda (for Willian, 82) 6: Did well in his brief audition.
