Argentina strike gold as Paraguay see red

Argentina won their first Olympic gold medal in 52 years on Saturday with a 1-0 triumph over Paraguay in the championship football match.

Carlos Tevez, with his eighth goal of the tournament, was Argentina’s hero as his team won a first ever football gold while Paraguay ended the tournament in disgrace after having two players red-carded.

Tevez, 20, struck early in the first half of a final Argentina dominated and in which they kept their impressive record of not having conceded a goal in the tournament.

Paraguay went into the match already handicapped by the absence of Jose Cardozo, their injured top-scorer, who had grabbed five of his team’s 12 goals on their way into the final.

Argentina, who left Barcelona star Javier Saviola on the bench, were fired by history.

Despite collecting two World Cup titles, they had never managed to win Olympic football gold with just two silver medals to show in 1928 and 1996.
