Ed Woodward, Manchester United’s executive vice-chairman, has assured Anthony Martial that he has a future at Old Trafford.

Martial scored 17 goals in his debut season under Louis van Gaal, but fell out of favour under José Mourinho, who started the France forward in just 18 Premier League matches last term.

Mourinho has voiced his concern about the 21-year-old’s attitude, but according to the striker’s agent, Philippe Lamboley, Martial will be at United for many years to come.

“I would like every 21-year-old player to have already played 180 games with the pros,” Lamboley told Journal du Dimanche.

“Anthony’s career is quite simply exceptional. He has two years left on his contract, and there is no reason today for him to leave Manchester.

“If Ed Woodward calls me to tell me he wishes to see him leave, things will be different. But that’s not what he said to me during our last meeting.”

Martial scored just eight goals last season under Mourinho and made the majority of his appearances on the left wing. There seems to be little chance of the Frenchman being moved inside next term to play the central striker’s role as United have made signing a No 9 their priority in the summer transfer window.

United are desperate to keep hold of David de Gea, the goalkeeper, this summer despite renewed interest from Real Madrid.

Florentino Pérez, the Real Madrid president, does not know whether he will be able to sign the Spanish goalkeeper from United, however.

Speaking after Real Madrid defeated Juventus to win their 12th Champions League, Pérez said: “I don’t know where he will play next season because I’m not a fortune teller.”

De Gea has two years left on his deal at United and the club have an option to extend his contract by one more season. De Gea came within minutes of moving to Real Madrid in September 2015, but the deal fell through at the last minute because the requisite documents were not uploaded to Fifa’s Transfer Matching System in time.
