Lord Chief Justice
Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers succeeds Lord Woolf as the new Lord Chief Justice from October 1. Lord Justice Clarke will succeed Lord Phillips as Master of the Rolls with Lord Justice Judge appointed President of the Queen’s Bench.
Circuit bench retirements
His Honour Judge Fabyan Evans, Resident Judge for Middlesex Guildhall Crown Court, will retire from the Circuit Bench in the London Region on July 2. His Honour Judge Geoffrey Mercer has retired from the Circuit Bench in the London Region.

DIPLOMATIC APPOINTMENTS
High Commissioner to Barbados
Mr Duncan Taylor has been appointed British High Commissioner to Barbados, in succession to Mr John White who will be retiring from the Diplomatic Service. Mr Taylor will also be Non-Resident High Commissioner to Antigua and Barbuda, the Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, and St Vincent and Grenadines, and will take up his appointment in November.
Ambassador to Mexico
Mr Giles Paxman, LVO, has been appointed Ambassador to the United Mexican States (Mexico) in succession to Denise Holt, who has transferred to another Diplomatic Service appointment and will take up his appointment in October.

Professor Margaret MacMillan has been elected Warden, in succession to Sir Marrack Goulding, who will retire in September 2006.

The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Birmingham attended a memorial service for Sir Kenneth Corley, Chairman of Lucas Industries, 1969 to 1973, held yesterday at Carrs Lane Church, Birmingham. The Rev Stuart Veitch officiated.
Mrs Ann Allen, daughter, read the lesson.
Sir Anthony Gill and Mr Andrew Veitch paid tribute. Among others present were:
Mr and Mrs Peter Corley (son and daughter-in-law), Mr Eric Allen (son-in-law), with other members of the family and friends. The chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the Pro Vice-Chancellor of Birmingham University, and the chief executive of the Bristol branch of the Engineering and Employers’ Federation, colleagues from Lucas Industries throughout the United Kingdom and representatives of other organisations having connection with Sir Kenneth.
