State Opening of Parliament

Parliament will be opened by the Queen at 11.30am on Tuesday, November 6, 2007.

Peers who will be present at the ceremony may apply for a place in the chamber for their peeress or husband, and for their eldest son or daughter above 14 years of age.

A limited number of seats in the Royal Gallery will be available for guests of members of both houses of Parliament. Members of the House of Commons should apply for these seats to the Speaker’s secretary, House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA.

Application forms will be sent to those peers eligible to attend in due course.

Brigadier Anthony Vercy, QVRM, TD, DL, presided over the Reserve Forces and Cadets Association for Greater London dinner held at HMS President on Thursday. Major-General W.G. Cubitt, CBE, General Officer Commanding HQ London District, was the principal guest.

At the annual meeting on June 29 Professor J. D. Last was elected president of the council. T. F. Hayward, OBE, and D. H. Barnes, OBE, were elected vice-presidents, I. P. A Stitt was elected honorary treasurer and Professor A. P. Norris was elected chairman of the technical committee. P. Chapman- Andrews, LVO, MBE, was elected chairman of the membership and fellowship committee. Other members of the council elected were: AVM M. J. D. Brown, D. Cockburn, A. H. Creighton, Dr C. S. 5th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers

A regimental dinner was held at Kirkcudbright, southwest Scotland, on Friday July 5, 2007, during annual training. In attendance were Brigadier T. Minter, OBE, DL, Colonel of The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and Lieutenant-Colonel P. M. Hodgson, TD, Commanding Officer, 5th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope, KCB, OBE, to be Commander-in- Chief Fleet and Commander Allied Maritime Component Command Northwood, in succession to Admiral Sir James Burnell-Nugent, KCB, CBE, with effect from November 6, 2007. This appointment also carries with it the title of Vice-Admiral of the United Kingdom.

Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia

Mr Norman Ling has been appointed Ambassador to the Federal Democratic Repubic of Ethiopia in succession to Mr Robert Dewar, CMG, who will be transferring to another Diplomatic Service appointment. Mr Ling, former British High Commissioner in Lilongwe and Deputy Head of Mission in Ankara, will take up his appointment in January 2008.

Bishop of Worcester

The Queen has approved the nomination of the Right Rev John Geoffrey Inge, BSc, MA, PhD, Suffragan Bishop of Huntingdon, for election as Bishop of Worcester in succession to the Right Rev Peter Stephen Maurice Selby MA, BD, PhD, who resigns on September 30, 2007.
