Today’s royal engagements

The Prince of Wales, Duke of Rothesay, will visit the Weir Group, Cathcart, Glasgow; as Patron, Macmillan Cancer Relief, will meet staff and patients, The Oaks Hospice, Elgin, Moray; and will open the first phase of the refurbished Royal Scottish Academy building, The Mound, Edinburgh.

The Earl of Wessex, as Trustee, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, will attend a reception for the Award’s Golfing Society Guest Day, at Wentworth Club, Wentworth, Surrey, at 7pm.

Service of thanksgiving

Sir Peter Yarranton

A service of thanksgiving for the life and work of Sir Peter Yarranton will be held at the RAF Church of St Clement Danes, Strand, London, WC2, on Friday, September 5, 2003, at noon. Those wishing to attend are asked to contact the Rugby Football Union, Council Services Department, Rugby House, Rugby Road, Twickenham, TW1 1DS, in writing or by e-mail to amyhesling@rfu.com marking the correspondence “Memorial Service” by no later than Monday, September 1, 2003. Tickets will not be issued and all are welcome to attend.

See of Blackburn

The Ven Nicholas Stewart Reade, Archdeacon of Lewes and Hastings, has been nominated for election as Bishop of Blackburn in succession to the Right Rev Alan David Chesters on his resignation.

Nicholas Reade, 56, was educated at Leeds University and trained for the ministry at the College of the Resurrection, Mirfield. His first post was as assistant curate at St Chad’s Coseley, Lichfield diocese from 1973 to 1975. Since 1997 he has been Archdeacon of Lewes and Hastings. He is a trustee of the University College at Chichester and a member of the Dioceses Commission.

Mr Paul Mitchell has been appointed a District Judge on the Western Circuit, with effect from September 1. Mr Mitchell, 39, was admitted as a solicitor in May 1991. He has been a partner at Hancock Caffin (formerly Hancock and Lawrence), in Truro, since 1991. He has been a deputy District Judge on the Western Circuit since February 1999.
