In 490BC Phidippides was sent by the Athenians to Sparta to seek Spartan help for the Athenian army facing a Persian invasion; in 1666 the Great Fire of London began, lasting until September 5; in 1945 the Second World War ended when General Douglas MacArthur accepted the Japanese surrender on board the battleship USS Missouri.
