A French pupil of Alfred Brendel, Queffelec plays with a delightful lightness of touch, coupled with intellectual penetration. She shares the master’s love of Haydn (two of the four works were included in Brendel’s final solo recital, just released on CD), though Queffelec’s playing is more feminine and feline. Sonata No 62 sets the disc spinning with its teasing wit, elegantly poised slow movement and brilliant finale. Pleasures conclude with the finale of Sonata No 54 — funny enough in its crazy leaps to make you laugh out loud.
