Anne Keothavong, the British No 1, set up a second-round match against Sania Mirza, of India, with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Sofia Arvidsson, of Sweden, at the AEGON Classic in Birmingham yesterday.
While Keothavong became the fourth British player to progress to the second round, Naomi Broady, 19, is tantalisingly poised against Alla Kudryavtseva after play was abandoned for the day because of rain.
The Cheshire-born qualifier was in prime form against the Russian, who is ranked 297 places above her and dispatched Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon last year. Broady was due to serve at 4-5 in the third set, with the match standing at 7-5, 6-7, having squandered four match points.
