Anglophile Germans

Sir, For many years there have been “British days” in northern Germany featuring an outdoor replica of the Last Night of the Proms (report, September 13). In Hamburg and Krefeld I have watched thousands of Germans turn up with their miniature Union flags, fold-up chairs and picnic hampers to sing Land of Hope and Glory as lustily as any Royal Albert Hall crowd. Equally curiously, these events also give Anglophile Germans the opportunity to play rugby and cricket, drive their old British sports cars and even queue for fish and chips.

Nor is it the case that this month’s Albert Hall concert was seen for the first time on television in Germany. Viewers in North-Rhine Westphalia have been able to watch it live for many years.

Yours faithfully,

DAVID WOODHEAD,
