It is nearly 20 years since I last saw this neo-noir supernatural thriller, and I had completely forgotten how wonderful it looks. Parker’s desire, as stated on his commentary, was to make “a black and white film, but in colour”, and his use of light and shadow recalls films made in the 1940s, a decade before the film is set.

Rourke is well cast as the gritty but confused private eye sent on a missing-person goose-chase by a twinkly-eyed De Niro, while the sets and locations are stunning.
