American English

Sir, Recently I was dining with some Americans who were discussing whether to buy the latest Harry Potter book during their forthcoming visit to London. One of the ladies asked whether there was much difference between the American and British versions.

The other lady replied that the only difference was that the text in the British version contained the extra letters at the end of words which the English are inclined to add.

Yours faithfully,

ELIZABETH BARRETT,
