Garmisch-Partenkirchen Workers teeter on the edge, 3,300ft (1,000m) above the ground and, seemingly, with little protection in the southern Bavarian Alps, as they complete construction of a spectacular viewing platform.

The AlpspiX, on the Alpspitze peak near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, close to the southern border, is formed of two 80ft crossing platforms which protrude more than 40ft over the edge of the mountain and into the abyss.

When complete, each arm will end with a glass wall, providing visitors with panoramic views of Hoellental and Garmisch, and a spectacular view to the ground — should they really feel the need to look down. The AlpspiX is due to open on July 4.
