Allen aims to prove a point

THE young lions are leading the pride in the English Amateur Championship at Alwoodley, Leeds. Six of the quarter-finalists are aged 20 or under, including Laurence Allen, 17, who was overlooked for the Boys’ Home Internationals team along with Matthew Baldwin and Andy Town, both of whom had 2 and 1 victories yesterday.

“It’s a dream to reach the last eight,” Allen said after his 4 and 3 fifth-round victory over Gareth Hastie. “Hopefully I’m proving the selectors wrong.”

Just two seeds remain: Gary Lockerbie, 20, and Richard Walker, at 32 easily the oldest survivor. Gary Wolstenholme, the Amateur champion, lost on the final green in the fourth round to Joe Ferguson, from Kidderminster, who later lost to Lockerbie.
