Britain’s new trumpet star Alison Balsom goes for baroque in this disc composed, despite the title, of works Bach didn’t write for trumpet at all. He wrote them for solo cello, ensemble trio, keyboards, even choir. With her gleaming but flexible tone set against organ, violin and continuo, the rewards are manifold in the adapted concertos, bright and meaty; less so in Bach’s “golden hits”, such as the B Minor Mass’s Agnus Dei.
