The young couple were in the close confinement of an aircraft’s economy cabin, aboard a flight that was delayed, and stuck in each other’s company. This was when the man decided to break up with his girlfriend.
The passengers around them heard it all — the sobs, the accusations of betrayal, the question of who he had been texting — and one of them began reporting the break-up live on Twitter.
By the time the plane landed, after a turbulent journey out of North Carolina, the dialogue of their break-up was trending on the social media site.
Early on, as his girlfriend was heard sobbing loudly, the young man had apparently advised her that he had “learnt to get over a lot of things and you need to learn too”, according to Kelly Keegs, a New Yorker who was seated across the aisle and posted a detailed record of the conversation, plus photographs.
The two were heard discussing the issue of trust. “Well who were you texting on the golf course yesterday?” the woman demanded. The thousands who were now following Ms Keegs’ tweets did not receive a proper answer. “Are you seriously surprised at this information?” the man responded.

“Just great,” she said. “I’m so glad I paid 40 extra dollars to be on this f***ing flight with you.” More revelations followed. “Is that what you’re starting to do with me? Just slow fade me out? Just like the others?” the girl asked.
Ms Keegs, who posts regularly about her busy social life, declared this was “the greatest plane delay I’ve ever had”.
The tearful girlfriend was said to have declared: “I’m going to ask Charlotte and we’ll see if your stories match.” Ms Keegs posted a breathless aside: “Omg scandal, who’s Charlotte.”
Then, to the bewilderment of passengers, Ms Keegs and the many reading online, they apparently began to make up. After take-off “they ordered SIX vodkas for the 50-minute flight and chugged them in silence between makeouts [kissing]”. Fellow passengers speculated on whether the couple would be taking separate taxis home.
