1988: Is named Rookie of the Year on the European Tour after coming 52nd on the Order of Merit.
1992: Overtakes 25 players in the final round of the US Open to finish third, three strokes behind Tom Kite.
1993: The first of his seven consecutive European Orders of Merit after winning the Dutch Open and Volvo Masters.
1995: Beats Ben Crenshaw in the singles as Europe regains the Ryder Cup; leads Scotland to victory in the Alfred Dunhill Cup.

1997: Scores 3½ points out of five as Europe retain the Ryder Cup at Valderrama.
1999: Has his best year in terms of wins, claiming the B&H International, Volvo PGA, Loch Lomond, Scandinavian Masters and BMW International titles as well as winning the World Match Play for the only time.
2002: Wins 4½ points and is cheered all the way round the Belfry as Europe regains the Ryder Cup. Plays a key role as Europe win again by a record margin in 2004.
2005: Caps a momentous recovery from a slump, finishing second behind Tiger Woods at the Open at St Andrews, winning the dunhill Links Championship and sealing his eighth Order of Merit.

DISASTER
1994: Makes three double-bogeys in an 18-hole play-off to lose US Open to Ernie Els.
1995: Birdies the last three holes of US PGA to get into a play-off but Steve Elkington holes a 25-foot putt to deny him.
1997: Misses a four-foot par putt at the 71st hole to come second to Els again in US Open.
2006: Double-bogeys the last hole of the US Open when a par would have won him the title. Misses the cut in the other three majors for the first time in his career.
