A mild mid winter

Has January really been that cold?

Sir, In Piers Corbyn’s letter (Jan 21) he said that “the weather is our judge”. If that’s the case I think he has been found well and truly guilty. Instead of being one of the six coldest Januarys for 100 years, or even one of the the coldest since 1987, my local weather station reported an average maximum more than 2 degrees above the long-term average, with highs of 14 degrees last weekend. In fairness there were some poor conditions across the higher routes of northern England at the very end of the month but really nothing out of the ordinary for mid-winter.

Perhaps the fault isn’t in Mr Corbyn’s forecasts but in the public interpretation of them. I look forward to hearing where we went wrong, so I can plan accordingly in the future.
