A Film About Jimi Hendrix

Director: Gary Weis, NC, 1973

Stars: Jimi Hendrix, Pete Townshend, Mick Jagger, Lou Reed

This rockumentary is well titled, tempering its awe for Hendrix’s fiery genius with insight into the sensitive man his more licentious anthems might obscure. Townshend and Clapton deliver convincing sermons on Hendrix’s creativity and brilliance, but Weis’s most compelling interviewees are the girlfriends and groupies who got to know Hendrix best.

Killer live footage tells the rest of the story, in particular the bonus material of Band of Gypsies’ legendary take of Machine Gun, in which Hendrix evokes the roaring horror of Vietnam through his delicately abused guitar.
