A culture of competition

Sir, The responsibility for creating an environment in which entrepreneurship can flourish does not lie with the UK Government alone (“Brown fails in efforts to boost new businesses”, Jan 16).

UK plc can play an important role in identifying and nurturing innovative companies. Too many start-ups fail in the early stages owing to poor strategy or lack of infrastructure, yet big businesses can advise them on a range of issues to ensure that they get their ideas off the ground. In this way both parties stand to benefit — not only will successful start-ups help to drive the UK economy forward, but they can also teach established corporates better agility and flexibility.

We should stop looking to the Government to apply a quick-fix solution to our failure to produce a nation of entrepreneurs. Instead, we must all look at what we can do to promote and sustain a healthy entrepreneurial culture that will produce the innovators of tomorrow.
