Sir, The proposed garden bridge is, I fear, no more than a romantic folly. Why not go the whole hog and build a replica of the medieval inhabited London Bridge? One need only look at the Globe theatre to see how good we are at this sort of thing, and the housing and shops on the new bridge would cover the cost of its construction. The modernist architects would hate it, of course, but the multitude of visitors who flock to the Ponte Vecchio in Florence prove that it would be a tourist sensation.

Sir, Why can’t we simply convert an existing bridge over the Thames into a garden bridge? This would cost a fraction of the price of a new bridge.
