Lesser-known coastal town in Europe has new direct flights from the UK – as well as cheap beers

The likes of Marilyn Monroe and Brad Pitt have visited resorts on its shores

BRAND new flight routes will open up an often overlooked holiday destination to Brits later this year.

Compared with hotspots in the rest of Europe, Montenegro is almost ignored by Brits, despite having stunning landscapes, amazing beaches and very cheap beer.

And the country is now ready to welcome a new wave of summer holidaymakers from the UK, with easyJet launching a new direct service from Bristol to the town of Tivat.

The airline will operate twice weekly departures on Mondays and Fridays between June 24 and August 31. One-way fares will start from £58pp.

Bristol will become the third city that easyJet has linked to Tivat, with London Gatwick and Luton Airport also offering flights to the coastal town.

Tivat is home to a scenic harbour, as well as caves, lakes and mountain trails.

Speedboats leave the bay each day to take people out to explore sea caves, while the bars in the town serve beers for around £2.

Tivat is also a convenient base for people wanting explore the rest of the country, which is home to some amazing natural sites, historic towns and beaches.

Among the top destinations in Montenegro are Kotor, with its stunning reflective bay positioned next to a fascinating old town famous for its winding streets and Romanesque churches.

Elsewhere, the old town of Stari Bar can be found nestled among the hills at the foot of Mount Rumija.

Its crumbling fortress looks impressive, while the town centre has plenty of bars and restaurants serving beer and cevapi - a local grilled meat dish often served with sauce in pitta bread.

Montenegro is also home to 180 miles of coastline, along which some famous beaches can be spotted.

One of those is Sveti Stefan, which contains a five-star resort built on top of a former 15th century residential village that juts out into the sea on a small islet.

Famous guests at Sveti Stefan include Marilyn Monroe, Princess Margaret and Brad Pitt.

For those not fortunate enough to be staying in the resort, the beach next to it is publicly accessible, so visitors can sunbathe and swim in the waters next to the island.

CELEB VISITORS

Celebs are frequent visitors to the quieter beaches of Montenegro, including the likes of The Rolling Stones and Madonna.

Both have performed concerts on Jaz Beach in the area surrounding the town of Budva - another popular town in the country.

Luckily for Brits hoping to head to the Balkan nation for a summer trip, easyJet isn't the only airline launching flights to Tivat this year.

Holidaymakers in Birmingham will benefit from new flights from Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, who will be operating a weekly Thursday service from May 2.

A second weekly service will then begin on Mondays, coming into operation from July 1 until October 31.

A night for two in Tivat can be booked from around £20.

For people looking for a more established holiday destination this summer, Jet2 is also launching new flights to Greece from three different UK airports.

According to Travel Gossip, the budget airline will be increasing its summer capacity to the country this year.

That will include seven new routes being added to the airline's flight schedule.

Among those will be five new routes from Liverpool Airport to Corfu, Heraklion, Kos, Rhodes and Zante.

Elsewhere, Jet2 will also be flying from Birmingham Airport to Mytilene, and to Chania from Newcastle.
