Gary Neville brought up the pair having tried their hand at the sport during a visit to Dublin last summer.

In March 2023, Keane, Neville, and Jamie Carragher were on tour around Ireland to promote a live episode of 'The Overlap' podcast at the 3Arena.

During this round trip, they found themselves in Croke Park, meeting - and receiving a hurling crash course from - Kilkenny legend TJ Reid.

Footage from their time at GAAHQ was shown on the big screen at the 3Arena, the reaction to which was tweeted by '@KeaneReactions'.

The Irishman did not appear to have much of an issue at all, cracking the ball over the black spot at ease on two occasions, much to the delight of the live crowd.

However, his former Man Utd teammate Neville and Liverpool legend Carragher had a harder time.

Both took a swing at the sliotar but only found fresh air, drawing mocking laughter from both Keane and the assembled audience.

However, to his credit, Neville did manage to strike a fine effort over the bar from the edge of the D.

And he celebrated the achievement with more enthusiasm than he would have done any of his eight Premier League titles with the Red Devils.

Recounting the experience, the former England international said: "We actually did a thing over in Ireland where we did it.

"I actually did it from the half-way line, but [Roy] actually was very good," to which Roy responded: "I wouldn't go that far but obviously I played as a kid."

At this point, Ian Wright queried: "Is that the one where you catch the ball and you can run with it and kick it?" leading to Keane correcting: "No, that's gaelic football. This is hurling.

"Speed, high-scoring. It's an amateur sport, these guys are amateurs."

Gary Neville then brought up TJ Reid, describing the Kilkenny icon as a "tank" and comparing his physique to that of a goalkeeper of centre-back in soccer.

He added: "It's a great name" before Keane quipped: "It's not as good as Jimmy Barry Murphy."
