HEARTBREAKING tributes have poured in for a Polish man who was killed in a horror crash in Co Longford yesterday.

Damian Machnowski, who was aged in his 30s, sadly passed away at the scene of the smash on the N55 in Ballymahon when the car he was driving struck a wall.

There were no other vehicles involved in the incident and Damian, who was the driver and sole passenger of the car, sadly passed away despite efforts of emergency services at the scene.

His body was taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar, Co Westmeath for a post-mortem examination.

Damian was employed as a factory worker at Ronaynes Wood Products, a local timber manufacturer.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, managing director Jarlath Ronayne said the news of Damian's tragic passing has left the local community reeling with shock.

He hailed the young man as a "highly thought of and hard worker" who had been working with the company and living in the area for 16 years.

Gardai are investigating the fatal road crash, which marked the 97th death on Irish roads so far this year.

Some 85 people had lost their lives in road traffic collisions during the same period of 2023.

The road that Damian sadly lost his life on was closed off for a number of hours yesterday as Forensic Collision Investigators conducted an examination of the scene.

Cops have urged anyone who may have any information to come forward and assist them in their investigations.

In a statement yesterday morning, a Garda spokesperson said: "Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

"Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time of the collision are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Ballymahon Garda Station on 090 6432303, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."

Meanwhile, a woman has died in a two-vehicle collision between a car and truck in Waterford this morning.

The death brings the number of people who have died on Irish roads this year to 100.

This is compared to a total of 87 people losing their lives in crashes on roads across Ireland during the same period in 2023, representing a 14 per cent increase

Gardai and emergency services rushed to the scene of the fatal crash in Dungarvan near Garranbane on the N25 at around 9:20am this morning.

The woman, who was travelling in the car involved in the smash, was pronounced dead at the scene.

It has been reported that the driver of the truck was treated at the scene for shock by emergency services. He was not seriously injured in the crash.
