A WOMAN, aged in her 70s, has been killed in a horror crash between a car and a truck in Co Waterford this morning.

Gardai and emergency services rushed to the scene of the fatal crash in Dungarvan near Garranbane on the N25 at around 9:20am this morning.

The woman, who was driving the car involved in the smash, was treated at the scene for her injuries but sadly pronounced dead a short time later.

It has been reported that the driver of the truck was treated at the scene for shock by emergency services.

He has been taken to Waterford University Hospital where he is receiving treatment for injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

The latest tragedy brings the number of people who have been killed on Irish roads so far this year to 100.

This is compared to a total of 87 people losing their lives in crashes on roads across Ireland during the same period in 2023, representing a 14 per cent increase

Gardai and emergency services remain at the scene of the tragedy with an examination by Forensic Collision Investigators currently under way.

The road has been closed and local diversions remain in place.

Cops have warned of traffic delays and asked anyone who is travelling in the area to avoid the road and avail of local diversions that have been put in place.

A Garda spokesperson said: "Local diversions are in place and road users are asked to take alternative routes if possible."

Gardai are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the tragedy to come forward with information.

In a statement this afternoon, a Garda spokesperson said: "Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.
 
"Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time of the collision are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
 
"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Dungarvan Garda Station on 058 48600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."

In a statement, Waterford Fire Service said: "Waterford Fire Service was alerted to a road traffic collision on the N25 at Garranbaune, Dungarvan at 9.27am this morning.

"Brigades from Dungarvan and Kilmacthomas responded and remain at the scene.”
