ANOTHER CRASH ABROAD

Separately, an Irish student has been left fighting for his life in Chicago following a horror car crash.

Shane Campbell, 22, from Kells, Co Meath, was in a taxi involved in a horrific car accident, leaving him in an induced coma as well as a significant abdominal trauma.

Like many Irish students, Shane went to Chicago to work for the summer when the incident took place, leaving him fighting for his life.

He has been a patient at John H Stroger Hospital of Cook County since June 5.

Family and friends have launched a GoFundMe page to help with his medical needs as his insurance will not cover any of his rehab care.

They said: "Shane's American dream turned into a nightmare as the taxi he was a passenger in was involved in a horrific car crash.

"Shane was initially maintained in an induced coma and intubated.

"As well as several broken bones, more seriously, Shane suffered significant abdominal trauma, which has required ten surgical procedures to date and may require more in the future.

"He has thankfully improved, is awake and cognitive, but faces a long road to recovery.

"He needs several more weeks of medical care in John H Stroger Hospital of Cook County followed by months of rehab."
