TRAGIC CYCLIST DEATH

On Saturday morning, an elderly cyclist died after he was found in a serious condition on a roadside in Co Cork.

The pensioner, 77, was cycling on the outskirts of Cobh, where he lived at around 8.30am.

He has been named locally as Michael Kavanagh from Elton Estate in Cobh.

He was a retired fitter and was active and healthy.

Michael was found by a pedestrian unconscious lying on a footpath at Ballywilliam who immediately alerted the emergency services.

Paramedics treated him at the scene before rushing him by ambulance to Cork University Hospital.

He died shortly after admission from injuries received in the fall from the bicycle.

Gardai have contacted the local coroner and requested that a post mortem be carried out on the body of the cyclist.

The 77-year-old was well liked in the town and will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Gardai called in the services of a forensic collision investigator and the road was closed off for a time on Saturday with diversions in place.
