Heartbreak as man killed in horror Westmeath crash was American tourist on way to airport with wife

This comes after the fatal crash that occurred at the same place within 24 hours

A MAN who died in a horror crash in Westmeath was an American tourist who was on his way to Dublin Airport with his wife.

Joe Marroquin, who was visiting his family in Whitehall, died in a horror two-vehicle collision on the R394 at Gartlandstown in Castlepollard, Co Westmeath.

Joe Marroquin, aged in his 80s been named by locally after the tragedy.

He was a resident of Texas in the United States who was visiting Ireland in the past month with his wife.

The couple were staying with family in the area and had been on their way to Dublin Airport, where the tragic accident occurred.

Joe was pronounced dead at the scene and his wife was taken to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore.

She remains in critical condition.

The passenger and driver of the second vehicle, two men in their 20s and 30s, were also injured but believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.

They also were taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar for treatment.

Garda are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

This comes after another fatal crash that happened within 24 hours in the area.

A man has been killed after the car he was driving left the road and slammed into a ditch.

Gardai were alerted to the incident, which happened on the R395 at Teevrevagh, Castlepollard, Co Westmeath, at around 6.40pm July 2.

FATAL CRASH

The collision involved a single vehicle which had collided with a roadside ditch.

The male driver of the car, who was aged in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was the only person in the car and his body remains at the scene.

The R395 at Teevrevagh, Castlepollard was closed with local diversions in place.

A technical examination by a Garda forensic team was conducted during the night, gardai said.

They are also appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the Teevrevagh area are asked to make this footage available to them.
