A WEATHER expert has warned of "cool" weekend temperatures with "heavy rain" after an "unsettled week".

Met Eireann have also pinpointed where in Ireland will see the worst of "unseasonably windy" conditions that are set to hit over the next few days.

Winds will start to pick up today as it becomes "breezy" after a wet and cloudy morning.

Met Eireann's Linda Hughes advised the afternoon will clear into sunnier spells despite the windy conditions.

She said: "This morning will be mostly cloudy with patches of light rain, drizzle and mist.

"The rain will clear eastwards to sunny spells and showers for the afternoon and evening.

"Becoming breezy and light to moderate south west winds increase moderate to fresh westerly."

Temperatures will sit between 14C to 20C for the day.

These temperatures will be mildest in the southeast of the country before they drop slightly tonight, sitting between 7C to 11C.

Breezy conditions will continue throughout the night.

On top of wind there will be a mix of "clear spells and scattered showers."

Thursday will see the worst of the "seasonably windy" conditions.

Weather expert Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather took to X (formerly Twitter) to give an overview of the forecast.

He said: "A risk of some strong winds Wednesday and Thursday and then a low system moving across the country Thursday night into Friday with heavy rain and strong winds on South coast."

Met Eireann also warned: "Tomorrow will be breezy and blustery with fresh and gusty westerly winds.

Pinpointing the worst of the conditions they said: "It will be unseasonably windy at times, particularly in Ulster."

For the rest of the day Thursday it will be a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers with highest temperatures from 13C to 18C.

Cloud will increase in the southwest towards evening which will bring more light rain or drizzle.

Thursday night will see rain and drizzle turning heavy at times with wind easing slightly.

Weekend Forecast

Friday will see windy weather conditions carry over from Thursday in a light to moderate southwest to west wind with "heavy showers".

Met Eireann's Linda Hughes said: " Rain will clear from southern areas during Friday morning and will be followed by scattered showers, some turning heavy. Highest temperatures of 14C to 17C.

Friday night will see mostly dry spells although some showers will continue in the north and west.

Both Met Eireann and Carlow Weather's Alan O'Reilly have a bleak outlook for a cool and wet weekend.

Alan O'Reilly said: "Weather models showing a cool weekend with sunny spells and heavy showers.

"Temperatures are likely to increase a little next week but still looking unsettled at present."

A mostly dry morning will kick start Saturday before rain moves in.

Met Eireann said: "A mostly dry morning with sunny spells, although there will be some showers in the north and west and these will extend to other areas through the afternoon and evening.

"Highest temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees with a light to moderate westerly wind."

Sunday is also a mixed bag of weather with "sunny spells and scattered showers".

Highest temperatures for Sunday sit between 13C to 17C.
