Cork, Kerry and Waterford were placed under the warning at 1am this morning and will remain affected by the alert until 1pm this afternoon.

Met Eireann warned that the possible impacts of the heavy rain include localised flooding, difficult travelling conditions and poor visibility.

Carlow Weather's Alan O'Reilly said: "Rain has returned in style and moving up the country through this morning but brighter weather following behind it later.

"20mm has fallen already at Sherkin Island in Cork."

The UK Met Office has also placed Antrim, Armagh, Down, Tyrone and Derry under a similar rain warning, which will kick in at 12pm this afternoon and remain in place until 6am tomorrow morning.

They said: "Spells of rain, heaviest across eastern areas, will push northeast across much of Northern Ireland on Monday, clearing Tuesday morning."

Despite the wet forecast, temperatures look set to remain in the high teens.

This morning, outbreaks of rain will extend northwards, with heavy falls in places.

A clearance to sunshine and showers will develop in the Southwest by early afternoon, gradually extending to all areas, except Ulster.

Met Eireann warned that some of the showers will be heavy.

Temperatures are expected to be cooler than recent days but will hit their highest between 13C and 17C.

Met Eireann expect some clearer spells early tonight with further patchy rain "embedded in the flow", mainly across northern areas early on and later across southern counties.

There will be areas of mist and fog, especially inland, as temperatures drop to their lowest between 7C and 10C.

Tomorrow is expected to be "mostly cloudy" with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle, turning heavier in the afternoon.

There will be some mild sunny spells in places throughout the day and temperatures will hit their highest between 14C and 19C.

Looking towards conditions over the rest of the week, Met Eireann said: "Scattered showers and light winds most days. Mild or warm sunshine in parts too."

WARMEST SPOTS PINPOINTED

Sunny spells and scattered showers are expected to dominate on Wednesday - but they will be most frequent in the southwest with most of the north and northeast staying dry.

Temperatures will hit their highest between 16C and 20C.

Met Eireann have confirmed that temperatures will be warmest across Connacht and Ulster.

People have been told to expect "sunshine and scattered showers once again" on Thursday.

It will be warm with highest temperatures of 18C to 22C but weather bosses confirmed that those near the coast will experience conditions on the cooler side as sea breezes develop.

Looking towards Friday, Met Eireann said temperatures are expected to fall back, with highs of 13C to 18C.

It will be "another day of sunny spells and scattered showers" with some areas again staying full dry.

Looking towards next weekend, the weather chiefs said: "A little cooler overall with sunny spells and well scattered showers."
