A BELOVED takeaway in Co Dublin has left customers "gutted" after confirming that they will close up for the final time this week.

Tony's Super Takeaway in Coolock Village admitted that the decision was one made with a "heavy heart" after decades in business.

Owner Pompeo, who runs the chipper with his family, confirmed that the business will close it's doors for the final time on Thursday.

The old fashioned eatery, which had been run by Pompeo for over three decades, has been a staple in the north Dublin suburb for almost 70 years.

Confirming his retirement, Pompeo said: "For now it is time for me to Retire and spend time with my Family.

"I would like to thank you for your support and custom over the last 35 years.

"Lastly I would like to thank my staff Bernie, Lisa & Tony for all their years of hard work and commitment,

"I will miss seeing you all everyday. Thank you again, Pompeo, Family & Team."

Loyal customers of the business were left devastated by the news of its closure, with one praising the takeaway for having the "tastiest fish and chips ever".

She said: "Great memories of my Da bringing up the tastiest fish and chips ever, soaked in salt n vinegar, after a rake of pints with his mates in the Sheaf.

"I still get them there for my mam, great staff and best Chipper ever! Best of luck and congratulations in your retirement, you'll be missed!"

Another agreed and added: "Happy Retirement- this was always the chipper of choice for my family from when I was a baby.

"The best chips around - the best chips eaten straight from the bag never made it to a plate!"

A third said: "We won’t know where to get our fish and chips now best chipper ever it will be sadly missed all the staff were genuinely the nicest people happy retirement you deserve it."

Dozens wished Pompeo a happy retirement whilst others described the closure as the "end of an era".

One customer said: "Very sadly missed the last of the old shops to close Coolock village won't be the same without a chipper good luck in you new ventures."

Another added: "Well deserved. Sad to see another great part of the village gone have a great time and thank for your service."

The closure comes after another Irish takeaway that was open for over 50 years confirmed that they would be shutting up shop too.

Cafe Roma in Kilkenny city, is a family-run takeaway based on John Street.

The joint is known for its "mouth-watering food" and serves classic takeaway grub.

But bosses announced in a recent statement that the cafe is closing its doors in the coming weeks.

They revealed the sad news in a statement on the front of their premises, saying: "It is with great sadness that the Cafe Roma closes its doors on Monday, June 3 after 57 years of business.

"We would like to thank all our customers, staff and suppliers for their support throughout the years."
