Dog expert reveals how to keep pets safe & calm during July 4 fireworks – a trick can help desensitize them to the noise

A preparation step keeps furry friends relaxed

FOURTH of July fireworks may light up your night, but certainly not your dog's.

While the noise can set off your furry friends, some pre-show preparation can keep them calm and safe.

AJ Arapovic, CEO and dog enthusiast at Showsight Magazineshared the pet-friendly tips and tricks.

"One of the most effective ways to keep your dog calm during firework displays is to create a safe, quiet space where they can retreat," he said.

Arapovic advised dog owners to keep their pets at home in a "safe" room instead of bringing them to fireworks displays.

"This could be a basement, a bathroom, or a room with fewer windows. Make it comfortable by equipping the space with your dog’s favorite bed, blankets, and toys. The familiar scents and items can provide comfort," he said.

Blackout curtains to soundproof the room, he added, go a long way to muffle the noise.

"Playing white noise or calming music can also help to drown out the sound of fireworks," he said.

Calming products, such as a thundershirt or CBD treats, can also soothe your pet's agitated psyche.

"A thundershirt is a snug-fitting jacket that applies gentle, constant pressure that has been known to calm some dogs during fireworks and thunderstorms," he explained.

"There are also calming collars and sprays which often contain pheromones that have a natural comforting scent, helping to reduce a dog’s anxiety.

"You can also try CBD oil and treats, which many pet owners have found success in using to help their dogs relax. Be sure to consult with your vet before trying any CBD product to ensure it’s safe for your pet.

"Similarly, in severe cases, your vet may prescribe anti-anxiety medication to help keep your dog calm. This should only be used as a last resort and under professional guidance."

Arapovic added that owners can physically exhaust their pets as a precaution before the fireworks go off.

"Tire your dog out with exercises like a long walk or vigorous play session earlier in the day," he said.

"A tired dog is more likely to remain calm and relaxed during the fireworks display.

"It’s also a good idea to feed your dog a substantial meal beforehand. A full stomach can have a noticeable calming effect."

Those willing to make the effort could also attempt to de-sensitize their dogs to the noise.

"You could try to desensitize your dog to fireworks in the days leading up to the 4th, gradually exposing them to recordings of fireworks at a low volume and rewarding calm behavior to help them get accustomed to the sound," he said.

In the worst-case scenario, Arapovic advised dog owners to keep all identification up-to-date.

"Ensuring your dog is microchipped and their collar has a current contact number will let them be quickly identified and returned in the event they go missing," he said.

"Ensure your dog wears a collar with an ID tag that includes your current phone number and address.

"Reflective tags can also help in case your dog runs away at night. It's also recommended to keep a recent photo of your dog on hand in case they do go missing."
