The return of season 23 will see DCI John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon), his sidekick DS Jamie Winter (Nick Hendrix) and no-nonsense pathologist Dr Fleur Perkins (Annette Badland) all return for the remainder of the series as the village of Midsomer is struck with death and murder once again.

Earlier this year fans were left distraught after the programme appeared to 'suddenly vanish' from TV schedules. It's also been confirmed for a 24th season to be filmed and air later this year.

The murder filled series first began in 1997 and is now on its 27th year of running as the latest season promises murder, mystery and crime.

Earlier this year it was revealed the series would be adding a new murder storyline in a series first.

Airing in the summer, the episode features an OnlyFans-style storyline about shoe fetishists.

It's thought to be a daring departure for the normally more sedate ITV staple, and sees comic actress Helen Lederer take a leading role.

In April she told The Sun on Sunday of her character’s saucy sideline flogging snaps.

She said: "It’s on a website as I’m selling my shoes to fetishists.

"I had to perfect a turn of the ankle. I wasn’t surprised when I got offered it. I thought to myself, ‘That interesting'."

The series has been a long running favourite on ITV, but earlier this year fans were left worried that it might have been axed.

The concern began as eagle eyed fans spotted that the usual primetime airing slot for the murder drama had been nudged out of the way for shows like Britain's Got Talent.

Fans took to social media to express their worry that Midsomer Murders might have been taken off air, with some wondering if the last season was it for the drama.

However it was confirmed in May that it would return as an insider told The Express: "We have more episodes of Midsomer Murders in the ITV1 schedule in the coming months.

"We don't reveal exact details of the schedule ahead of time, but suffice to say there's definitely more Midsomer Murders to come."

Midsomer Murders will return to ITV1 on Tuesday July 16 at 8.15pm.
