Making a Murderer explores the complex case of Steven Avery. He was previously exonerated after spending nearly twenty years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit, but was then arrested and sentenced two years later for the murder of Teresa Halbach. Steven’s nephew Brendan Dassey was also convicted of the crime, after he confessed during a police interview that was recorded on tape. The Netflix documentary, by Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, has now given the case worldwide exposure, placing it under public and professional scrutiny. Some of the questions that have arisen include whether Avery and Dassey received a fair trial, and whether the police conducted a thorough investigation at the time.
