TOTTENHAM star Rodrigo Bentancur has made a grovelling apology to team-mate Son Heung-min after making a “bad” comment about South Korean people.

The Uruguayan midfielder, 26, hit the headlines this week when he appeared on TV show Por La Camiseta in his homeland.

Bentancur was asked by host Rafa Cotelo for a Spurs player’s shirt, to which the star guest replied: “Sonny's?”

However, he then followed that up by saying: “It could be Sonny's cousin too as they all look the same.”

The clip of the interview soon went viral on social media and Bentancur was quickly slammed for his remarks.

Now Bentancur has taken to Instagram to issue an apology to his club captain after the fierce backlash.

Writing on his story, he wrote: “Sony brother! I apologise to you for what happened, it was just a very bad joke!

“You know that I love you and I would never disrespect you or hurt you or anyone else! I love you brother.”

His shock remarks come just over a year since Son, 31, was subjected to racist abuse during a 2-0 win over West Ham.

A statement from Spurs in February 2023 after that incident read: “We have been made aware of the utterly reprehensible online racist abuse directed at Heung-Min Son during today's match, which has been reported by the club.

“We stand with Sonny and once again call on the social media companies and authorities to take action.”

The FA also investigated that incident.

However, Son was racially abused again just months later during a Premier League clash with Crystal Palace.

A man, 44, was issued a three-year ban for his actions and hit with 60 hours of unpaid work and a £1,384 fine.

Bentancur is currently on a post-season break in his homeland while preparing to represent Uruguay in the upcoming Copa America in the USA.

He moved to Spurs from Juventus halfway through the 2021/22 campaign.

Bentancur has played 69 appearances for the club since and scored six times.
