Authorities believe he died after being trapped in the lift connected to the building’s garage from July 6 to August 2, which at the time was closed for renovation.

However, they have also discovered that he pressed the emergency alarm in the lift twice – on July 6 at 9.09am and 9.17am – but received no response from the operator.

Authorities in the city of Denver are now investigating why there was no response to his calls for help, reported the Denver Post.

Mr Komisarchik was finally found by elevator repair workers after complaints by building residents of a foul stench from the garage area.

At the time of his disappearance, the city’s authorities searched five nearby ponds that the pensioner could have fallen into.

Speaking at the time, his daughter Yelena told 9 News: “He actually walked to the mailbox to pick up the mail and to the office to get some things from there and then he just disappeared.”

She added that her father “couldn't take long walks” and that mental issue that come with aging meant he could get “disoriented at times”.

Authorities said the garage lift at the Woodstream Village building was last inspected in December and found to be in good working order.

The lift was supposed to be monitored by MEI Total Elevator Solutions and Greystar Management Services oversees the apartment complex.

The company said they were cooperating with the authorities investigating Mr Komisarchik’s death, which has yet to be formally determined by medical teams.
