Who is Lewis Daynes?

Lewis Daynes is the killer Breck Bednar thought he’d made friends with while online gaming.

He provided the schoolboy with an email outlining lies to tell his father — who believed Breck was staying with a 14-year-old friend.

Daynes was in fact 18 years old at the time.

Daynes was jailed for life in January 2015 after admitting murder.

Breck’s mother Lorin LaFave said she had expressed concerns about her son and online grooming to the police prior to his death.

What did Lewis Daynes do to Breck Bednar?

Breck, 14, lived with his mum and three siblings at their home in Caterham, Surrey.

He attended St Bede's School in Redhill and loved playing games on the internet.

After striking up a friendship with another online gamer, the teen was lured into meeting him on February 17, 2014.

Then 18-year-old Daynes got the younger boy to come over to his flat in Essex.

Breck was offered ownership of a fictitious multi-million pound software business.

Lewis Daynes makes his chilling 999 call

Daynes tied his hands and ankles with duct tape and slashed his throat.

It later emerged in court Daynes had been arrested and accused of raping a boy of the same age in 2011.

The morning after the murder, Daynes sent pictures of Breck’s body to friends, which were then reportedly seen on social media.

And in a chilling 999 call Daynes can be heard telling a police operator he had been in a fight with a friend and “only one of us has come out if it alive”.

Sentencing Daynes to life with at least 25 years, Justice Laura Cox told him at Chelmsford crown court: "The facts surrounding this murder are extremely disturbing.

“This murder was driven by sexual or sadistic motivation.”

How to watch the film Breck's Last Game

A short film about the horrific case was released as part of an awareness campaign in 2019.

Four separate police forces in England shared Brett's Last Game to help young people understand the dangers of online grooming.

Essex, Surrey, Northamptonshire and Leicestershire police showed the film to school kids in their areas.

Before the film’s release, Northamptonshire Police and Crime Commissioner Stephen Mold opened up about why it’s important for young people to learn about the case.

He said: “Lorin (Breck’s mum) advised her son and actually tried to stop him from doing some of the things but actually the subversive behaviour of the murderer meant that they still went on to manipulate the situation.

“So it's making people more aware."
