The family, from Flintshire in North Wales, watched in "absolute horror" as they feared falling victim to a deadly snake bite.

Screams filled the house after they noticed the sneaky brown reptile - as all plans for a wholesome roast dinner were destroyed.

Given the fear of snakes we have, you can imagine the screams

They found the legless lizard, which was in fact a slow worm, after forking out £370 on an online order with Sainsbury's while holidaying in Cornwall.

The industry giant has since apologised to the gobsmacked customers and branded the ordeal a "rare experience".

"On Sunday, we’d planned to make a roast dinner," the baffled shoppers told North Wales Live.

"We started preparing early in the morning as we’d planned a day out.

"We took the bag of potatoes out of the cupboard ready to prepare our roasters."

One member of the group said they mistook the creature for a thick potato root at first.

"Then to our absolute horror we saw it move," she explained.

"It was obvious initially it was large but only on closer inspection did we realise it was snake like.

"Given the fear of snakes we have, you can imagine the screams."

The whole clan were called in to investigate, but they had "no idea" what to do" as they "looked on in horror".

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “We have been in touch with [the customer] to apologise for this rare experience and offer a gesture of goodwill.

"We have processes in place to prevent this from happening and are investigating this case with our supplier.” According to The Wildlife Trusts, a slow worm is "a legless lizard".

They added: "Its identity is given away by its abilities to shed its tail and blink with its eyelids.

"Slow worms can be found in heathland, tussocky grassland, woodland edges and rides where they can find invertebrates to eat and a sunny patch in which to sunbathe.

"They are often found in mature gardens and allotments, where they like hunting around the compost heap."

The Sun contacted Sainsbury's for comment.

It comes as other stunned customers have made grim discoveries in their food and takeaway orders.
