BRITAIN'S most notorious prison has long been known as the Monster Mansion and even houses a notorious killer in a glass box.

HMP Wakefield holds infamous rapists, terrorists and serial killers banged up inside - including Sarah Payne's killer who was knifed there in February 2024.

Paedophile Roy Whiting was left covered in blood after being stabbed in the maximum security jail.

Cops were quick to probe the attack on the lag, who has been locked up since 2002 after he was convicted of murdering eight-year-old Sarah.

HMP Wakefield holds around 750 of the country's most dangerous criminals - predominantly sex offenders and prisoners serving life sentences.

A source told the Mirror: "Whiting is hated in prison. He was stabbed and was covered in blood. They were trying to kill him."

Whiting has been subject to a string of attacks in prison since he was locked up.

In 2020, The Sun revealed how he was knifed by fellow lags who screamed "you f***ing n***e" at him.

The monster was also beaten by Richard Prendergast and Kevin Hyden, who both admitted Section 18 wounding with intent.

He was also previously stabbed with a sharpened toilet brush handle by double murderer Gary Vinter.

While in 2002, killer Rickie Tregaskis slashed his cheek with a razor blade - leaving a 6-inch scar.

And he's not the only fiend to be attacked inside the prison's walls.

In early August 2023, former Lostprophets frontman Ian Watkins was stabbed while serving his sentence and raced to hospital after the attack.

He had been behind bars at the time - after being locked for 35 years in 2013 for 13 offences against children.

The convicted paedophile was taken hostage by three other lags, before being “roughed up” and shanked - and left in a critical condition.

A source told The Sun: “He was screaming and was obviously terrified and in fear of his life."

Elsewhere in the prison, serial killer Robert Maudsley - who tortured and murdered four men - spends 23 hours a day in a 18ft by 14ft underground Perspex box.

Maudsley, who was moved to Wakefield in 1978, has since vowed to kill again if he is ever released.

Monster Mansion - the notorious inmates at HMP Wakefield

OVER the years, the Yorkshire jail has become synonymous with Britain's most evil criminals.

Here are just some of the famous lags to walk the halls at the prison...

Harold Shipman - Nicknamed Dr Death, the monster is believed to have killed around 250 people. Shipman took his own life in his prison cell in 2004.

Levi Bellfield - Milly Dowler's killer is serving a whole life order at the prison over the brutal murder. He was also convicted of slaughtering Marsha McDonnell, 19, and Amelie Delagrange, 22, but is feared to have killed many more.

Robert Maudsley - 'Hannibal' killer Maudsley spends 23 hours a day in a 18ft by 14ft underground Perspex box at the jail. He was locked up for torturing and murdering four men.

Jeremy Bamber - The monster was convicted of the White House Farm murders in 1985 after slaying five members of his family.

Mark Bridger - Bridger snatched five-year-old April Jones from outside her home in Machynlleth, Mid Wales, in October 2012. He then claimed he had accidentally run the youngster over but was convicted of murder.

Ian Watkins - The Lost Prophets frontman was jailed for 35 years in 2013 for a string of child sex offences. Watkins was stabbed in the neck at the prison last August.

A slew of other depraved criminals are also imprisoned in the UK's largest high-security prison.

Harold Shipman stands out as the most notorious. The most prolific serial killer in modern times was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment on 15 counts of murder across three decades, but is suspected to have killed up to 250 people.

The doctor, who became known as 'The Angel of Death', lethally injected his helpless victims with diamorphine. He was found hanged in his cell in 2004 on the eve of his 58th birthday.

Little Chef waiter Jeremy Bamber slayed his adoptive parents, sister and nephews in a cold-blooded massacre in 1985.

Serving a life sentence, he has helped other prisoners to read and write and transcribed books into braille.

Indonesian citizen Reynhard Sinaga, a PhD student at Leeds University, lured his victims to his flat in Manchester before sedating and raping them. He would then flock to Whatsapp to boast of his sexual conquests.

The man - known as 'Britain's worst rapist' - was sent to HMP Wakefield in 2020 after sexually assaulting up to 200 men.

And Charles Bronson, widely regarded as Britain's "most violent prisoner", has endured a turbulent existence at the ill-famed prison.

'WAREHOUSE FOR THE WORST'

First sentenced to seven years for armed robbery, a subsequent crime spree - including an affinity for holding prison guards hostage in his cell - led to imprisonment at HMP Wakefield.

In recent years, savage prisoners have carried out vicious attacks against fellow inmates convicted for crimes against children.

In August 2022, the man accused of stabbing nine-year-old Lilia Valutyte to death in Lincolnshire was set upon by a cluster of prisoners with a makeshift "shank".

Lithuanian Deividas Skebas, formerly a fruit picker, was airlifted to an ambulance following the attack.

As well as its "Monster Mansion" nickname, HMP Wakefield has also been dubbed the "warehouse for the worst".

Each wing of the prison can house 160 inmates with cells containing hard iron beds.

But conditions in the facility are not nearly as stark as you may expect.

A report following the latest inspection of HMP Wakefield in 2018 revealed that "the prison was calm and had an atmosphere that spoke of good order, safety, security and decency".

Prisoners are reportedly able to order items from an Argos catalogue.

The prison's kitchen caters for myriad religious and medical diets.
