BUYING in bulk should be a good way to save cash – but many of us get it wrong and waste money.
Eighty-six per cent of us often snap up extra sales goods and BOGOFs but one in five never use the items they buy, a study from topcashback.co.uk discovered.
More than half of shoppers forget they bulk-bought items, while 48 per cent do not use them by the expiry date.
A further 17 per cent admit to buying so much they do not have space to store it all, so throw it in the bin. With shoppers spending on average £36.57 a week on bulk buys, it’s estimated that they are wasting £8.27 a week or more than £430 a year.
Natasha-Rachel Smith, Consumer Affairs Editor for topcashback.co.uk said: “Bulk-buying is always listed as one of the best ways to save money and it often can be.
“But for some consumers it’s a false economy, with a huge amount of goods just going in the bin and cash down the drain.”
So here are some tips on how to do it and always save money . . .
- Check what you already have. There is no point buying more of an item you are already stocked up on.
- Make a shopping list and be sure to stick to it. Do not be tempted by offers on goods that you simply do not need.
- If buying in bulk, share the purchase with friends and family to ensure the items all gets used — especially if they are perishable.
- Check expiry dates. Some stores use bulk-buy deals to shift items about to go out of date.
- If you have the space, bulk-buy non-perishables such as loo roll or cleaning products when they are on offer, because of course they will not go off.
