- Wrap up cards, wrapping paper and decorations. Premium stores like Marks & Spencer, Waitrose and Paperchase have all you need with savings of a third or better. Get three for two on all Christmas cards and wrapping at Waitrose.

- Double up deals. All the big retailers offer gift sets with up to 80 per cent off. Try Boots and Superdrug for cosmetics, House Of Fraser and Debenhams for fashion and accessories.
- Buy food out of season. Retailers push up prices of seasonal goods around peak buying times. Buy lobster and freeze it or stash prosecco if you see a good deal.
- Repackage and repurpose. Cheap gift sets can be opened up, getting rid of festive packaging, to give as presents all year round. Disney Beauty & The Beast Enchanted Ballroom Reveal was £49.99, now £24.99 at Smyths Toys.
- Grab toys to suit your child’s age range for next year. Most big-name toy stores will offer 30 per cent off or better.
