WHEN looking back at snaps of yourself from a decade ago, you’d probably be struck by how different the clothes were.
Even though 2007 was only ten years ago, style has certainly evolved since then.
Vlogger Safiya Nygaard, 24, braved stepping out in noughties fashion in 2017… with hilarious results.
The American YouTube personality put together four different outfits that echoed the year, as well as wearing makeup that was evocative of the time.
She explained: “It was a year of high-waisted jeans, headbands and hair dye.”
Saf’s first look was a tunic-style teal dress that she threw over a pair of black knee-length leggings.
She said: “I was inspired about what I was inspired wearing in the summer 0f 2007 as well as two of my favourite TV shows of the time – Gossip Girl and The Hills.
“Wearing leggings under things was how I got away with wearing a lot of dresses and skirts through highschool and they were also a big trend of the late 2000s.”
The outfit was completed with a pair of ballet pumps, a Blair Waldorf-inspired headband and a huge bag.
Saf confessed: “I used to walk for miles in ballet flats and my feet would be completely raw by the end.”
“Big bags were in – partially because celebrities liked to tote around their small dogs in them.
“But I also suspect it was to carry around all the gadgets you needed and all their respective chargers.”
Safiya’s makeup was a far cry from the contoured Instagram looks we see today, as she opted for some simple gold-sparkling eyeshadow and lip-plumping gloss.
While the vlogger didn’t feel too self-conscious walking around in the outfits in public, she admitted: “You can see the stark difference when I stand next to mannequins”.
Saf described her second look as “Ciara hosting TRL” – and it was made up of high-waisted jeans, a blouse, wedges and a waist-cinching belt.
Although the YouTuber admitted that not everyone accepted the craze, she said: “Many celebrities, runways and fashion magazines wholeheartedly accepted the high-waisted jeans trend.”
The next outfit gave a nod to “the scene and emo fashions from the mid-late 2000s.”
To achieve the noughties rocker look, which resembled something Avril Lavigne would wear, Saf wore a Fall Out Boy band tee and a tartan skirt.
She accessorised the outfit with a studded belt, knee high socks, arm warmers and pink hair extensions.
Finally, Saf tried out some clothes that she actually wore at school in 2007.
She remarked: “I was very into medium-wash flared jeans and long torso tops like this one.
“This top and this flowery converse are 100% authentic.”
In summary, the vlogger admitted that she wouldn’t try many of the items again, but she did enjoy the leggings.
She said: “I would love to continue wearing three quarter length cropped leggings.
“I like these things, they’re fun – and you only have to shave half your leg!”
It's not the first daring fashion challenge Saf has tested out.
Last week, she tried some clear Topshop jeans that have been causing a stir online.
