A MUM has been dubbed ''vile'' for her ''disgusting'' swimming habit which has left thousands divided.

The young woman says she swims every week with her family - even on days when she's on her period.

While that is totally normal, what sparked fury was the mum's open confession that when she does, she doesn't wear a tampon or a menstrual cup.

''I swim every Friday evening with my other half and my child,'' the fitness-loving parent shared on Mumsnet.

''My sister told me it was vile for me to swim while bleeding.

''But it was towards the end of my cycle and my period was pretty much over,'' she said.

The mum clarified that she wouldn't get in the pool with a 'heavy' flow - but going in at the end of her cycle wasn't an issue in her eyes.

''My sister said it's not fair on others swimming.

''Are there actually any rules about it? Would a tampon be suitable if you did want to swim?''

The swimming enthusiast also explained why she wasn't that keen on using tampons while swimming on her period.

''I'm not sure about others, but if I bathe while [wearing] a tampon, it will eventually fill up with water and expand rapidly.''

Just like her sister, many social media users were stunned by the mum's ''vile'' behaviour.

Primark is the latest store to sell period pants so you can ditch the tampons and pads - but not everyone’s impressed

''Period swimwear for light days and a cup for heavier days,'' one recommended.

''There is no way I'd get in a public pool where people might see blood running down my legs. Plus, it is just not the right thing to do.''

''So basically free bleeding into the pool? Isn't that equivalent to peeing in the pool? That's a no-no,'' another basted.

Is it unhygienic to swim on my period?

Concerns about hygiene during menstruation are common - but is going for a dip really that unhygienic? Experts explain...

''Menstrual fluids, which contain blood, vaginal fluids, and proteins, are easily treated by the chlorine in swimming pools, along with sweat and urine,'' said the team at period-tracking app Clue.

''The chlorine prevents the growth of bacteria and other microbes, making it safe for people to swim.

''In short, swimming during your period is perfectly hygienic, especially in well-maintained pools.''

A third reckoned this was ''worse'' than urinating in the pool.

However, not everyone saw an issue with it.

''There's nothing wrong with what she's doing, I use to wear a tampon but now I just wear period swimwear with board shorts over the top and I don't get leaks,'' a woman hit back.

''In my experience, the water pressure stops or slows your period flow, if there are any leaks I doubt you'll notice it. It's not like you're leaving a trail of blood,'' another agreed.
