We purchased the Kootek All-In-One Cake Decorating Kit so our reviewer could put it to the test in her kitchen. Keep reading for our full product review.

If you’re shopping for cake decorating supplies, the Kootek All-In-One Cake Decorating Kit offers a huge variety of must-have items, all for a low price. We wanted to see if the budget price meant the products were low quality, so we brought it home to test.

We whipped up frosting and icing, and we grabbed our favorite baking tools so we could decorate cakes, cookies, and cupcakes, giving us a chance to test all the contents of the kit. Here’s what we thought.

Design: Everything you need

When the Kootek All-In-One Cake Decorating Kit arrived, we thought we got the wrong item, because the box only mentions the turntable. However, once we opened it and peeked inside, we saw there was much more in the box, so we started pulling out all of the extras and making plans for a lot of baking.

In designing this kit, it seems like someone asked themselves what they’d need to decorate a cake, and then just included every single item that came to mind. The kit includes a turntable, as well as spatulas, decorating combs, a dozen piping tips, 50+ pastry bags, and a coupler.

The one flaw in the kit’s design is that it only includes a single coupler—that means only one pastry bag can be prepped and ready to use at a time. Couplers are inexpensive to buy separately, but it would have been nice to have three or four in the kit to make it easier to go crazy with frosting colors. Fortunately, we had spare couplers that we used for more complicated projects.

While we would have liked the kit better if it included at least one large piping tip for making oversized rosettes or swirled cupcake tops, the 12 included tips are appropriate for decorating cakes and other desserts, and we found good uses for them. Plus, because this kit is so affordable, you can easily buy a few extra piping tips if some of your favorites are missing.

We do wish the kit included storage for the tips and extra bags, though. The most obvious place would be the hollow base of the turntable, if only there was an included cover.

Quality: Decent quality

The largest piece in the kit—the cake stand—is made from plastic, but it’s sturdy enough to hold a cake and its simple design makes it effective for serving. A ribbon bow around the base could dress it up, if needed, but if your cake is pretty, no one is going to be paying much attention to the plain base. Further, the two spatulas and icing smoothers are similar quality to ones we’ve purchased on our own, so we can’t complain about those.

The product description said there were 50 disposable pastry bags included with the kit, but we decided to count them and found 55 bags—a nice bonus. The inside of the bags is smooth for easy frosting dispensing, and the outside is textured for improved grip, which we liked. The bags are thin, but sturdy enough to be refilled a few times.

The piping tips aren’t the most amazing quality we’ve seen, as they’re made with a seam along the side, but they worked well enough for our decorating.

However, the documentation with this kit is nonexistent. There was no information on the box, and all that was inside was a small card with warranty, web, and contact information. While just about everyone has access to online information, it would have been nice to have a list of included items, illustrations on how to use the tips, and cleaning information.

Performance: Works well and fun to use

If you’ve ever tried decorating a cake and accidentally stuck a thumb into the frosting while rotating the cake, you’ll appreciate the turntable in this kit. We loved the idea that we could spin the cake while creating a ridged pattern using the comb, and it also proved useful to slowly rotate the cake to pipe vines and add flowers. It was also handy to spin the cake around to make sure we liked our creation from all angles.

While the stand is obviously sized for a cake, we also found it useful for decorating gingerbread houses, since we needed to decorate them on all sides. Using the turntable, we could get to all the sides without sticking our fingers in wet icing. We also like the idea of using it to display anything that needs to be admired from all sides, like our finished gingerbread houses.

While the pastry bags were obviously thin and inexpensive, we loved the feel of them, and the thin material made them easy to twist at the top, keeping the frosting in place as we squeezed flowers onto cakes, cookies, and cupcakes. Even when we had to refill bags multiple times with frosting, they performed well.

We did have one blowout when using an overly dense royal icing, but thinner icings worked just fine. Plus, the fact that the bags are disposable makes final cleanup easy—just remove the tip and coupler, and toss the bag in the trash.

There were a few times when a piping tip got stuck inside a coupler—probably because of the seam—and we had to jiggle it loose, but it wasn’t a huge issue. We found it easy to swap tips out of the coupler, allowing us to pipe different designs with the same color of frosting when decorating cupcakes.

Cleaning: Easy enough

The product description says that all the parts are dishwasher safe, and obviously the bags are disposable. We tended to put the spatulas and smoothers in the dishwasher, but we preferred washing the tips, coupler, and turntable by hand. If cleaned right after use, frosting quickly wipes away with a little hot water and soap.

Price: Super affordable

Considering how many pieces are in the Kootek All-In-One Cake Decorating Kit, the price tag of $18.99 is more than reasonable. There’s really no need to buy extra decorating tips (unless you want to make a specific design), and there are more than enough pastry bags for even the most multi-colored creations.

If you’re planning to decorate a cake, the only things you need outside this kit are the cake itself and frosting.

Kootek All-In-One Cake Decorating Kit vs. Kootek 35-in-1 Cake Decorating Supplies

The same brand that makes this kit also offers the popular Kootek 35-in-1 Cake Decorating Supplies set. While double the price, it includes a metal cake turntable that will look a bit classier as a serving piece, and it also comes with reusable silicone pastry bags and more decorating supplies.

For someone who is decorating birthday cakes for family parties, the All-In-One set will likely be plenty, as extra tips are easy to buy if they’re needed. The 35-in-1, however, might be better for people who bake on a more frequent basis.

Final Verdict

Great set at a great price.

While Kootek might not be a familiar name for baking products, we were impressed with the comprehensive selection of tools in the All-In-One Cake Decorating Kit, and it would be a great low-priced investment for anyone who wants to level up their baking and decorating skills.
