With the Paris Olympics soon set to get under way, there has been talk that well-known South African sports ‘super fan’ Mama Joy was basically packed and ready to attend the next big event.

However, there has been talk that her travels – and that of other so-called super fans – could be halted by new Sports, Arts and Culture minister Gayton McKenzie.

Taking to social media recently, McKenzie stated that he had put a stop to all trips by super fans to South African sporting events.

“I have stopped all trips for super fans, we have athletes & artist who are struggling to raise money to attend sporting events and exhibitions, how do we justify paying for fans?” he stated.

“We shall no longer be paying for these trips and will use that money where it’s needed the most.”

It’s led to a widespread reaction, and even Mama Joy weighted in when speaking briefly to SowetanLIVE on Tuesday.

“There is nothing I can say about what he said. He didn’t say my name, and others can comment on what he said, but I will not. I am not scared of anything, but I won’t say anything.”

“What he said is what he said, but he didn’t mention my name. If my name was there, then I would be able to answer for myself. Maybe they are paying those super fans; I don’t know. It can happen,” said Mama Joy.

The ‘super fan’ has previously been sponsored by the government to attend major sporting events, such as the Rugby World Cup in France, the Fifa World Cup in Qatar, and the Cricket World Cup in India.

And last month Mama Joy tweeted a picture of herself with the caption: “I can’t wait, guys, Olympics in Paris”, in reference to the global event taking place from 26 July to 11 August in Paris, France.

So what has been the reaction to Mama Joy and other super fans possibly having their wings clipped?
