It’s good news, with South Africans voted friendliest in the world in the eyes of the international community. These are the findings of Remitly, a US-based money-transfer company, which conducted a survey of 3 000 people, reports Business Tech. Survey respondents answered a series of ‘agreeableness’ questions as part of a ‘Big 5 Personality Test’. The assessment looked at personality traits: openness, conscientiousness, agreeableness, extraversion, and neuroticism. ‘Agreeableness’, or friendliness, is deemed the most effective way to gauge social harmony within a nation.

Questions included whether respondents felt empathy for others, and whether they liked to make people feel at ease. Higher scores showed people are friendly, generous, helpful, and willing to compromise for the betterment of others. The same traits the happen to make South Africans the best employees globally and the friendliest, too.

South Africans voted friendliest in the world received a score of 34.63 out of 40. Foreigners who have travelled to Mzansi say the people are very friendly. The survey proffered that it is not uncommon to be greeted by strangers while walking down the street in South Africa. And that we’re happy to socialise and show off our good sense of humour. Remitly also says other compelling reasons to visit South Africa are the:

  • Affordable cost of living,
  • Favorable Rand/Dollar exchange rate (for foreigners).
  • Wildlife, warm climate and long stretches of beautiful coastline.
