RANGERS legend Ally McCoist issued an apology live on air after performing a U-turn while on Euro 2024 commentary duties.

The former Scotland striker was alongside Clive Tyldesley to summarise the last 16 clash between Germany and Denmark in Dortmund.

Germany progressed 2-0 in a game that was rammed full of VAR interventions and refereeing controversies.

The hosts had a goal ruled out inside the opening four minutes when Nico Schlotterbeck's header was disallowed by referee Michael Oliver.

And then a remarkable sequence of events early in the opening minutes of the second-half.

Denmark defender Joachim Andersen had a goal disallowed after VAR identified an offside in the immediate build-up.

And Germany went straight down the other end with Andersen himself dramatically penalised for handball - again after VAR intervention - and a penalty was awarded.

Kai Havertz netted with Jamal Musiala adding a second to send Germany into the quarter finals.

So there was certainly plenty for McCoist to chew over on commentary.

And the first of those controversial decisions - Germany's disallowed goal - had him APOLOGISING live on air.

Borussia Dortmund star Schlotterbeck towered above everyone else to power home a header just four minutes in, sending the stadium where he plays his club football wild.

But the joy was short-lived with the goal chalked-off immediately by English Premier League whistler Oliver.

Replays were of course subsquently shown, with ITV's refereeing expert Christina Unkel identifying a block by Joshua Kimmich on Andreas Skov Olsen, who had been the man marking Schlotterbeck as the big defender charged towards the goal.

Tyldesley added: "It is the player who's trying to mark Schlotterbeck who is blocked so it does have a direct impact."

McCoist didn't agree, however, and bellowed down his microphone: "It's a goal!"

Tyldesley added: "Lord McCoist is unconvinced."

In further drama, the referee took the player off of the park 35 minutes in as thunder, lightning and torrential rain engulfed the stadium.

After a delay of more than 20 minutes, the teams re-emerged to resume the action.

After the lengthy delay, there was something on McCoist's mind - still that early disallowed goal.

And immediately after play got back underway, he took the opportunity to say SORRY to the referee.

Performing a U-turn on his initial thought that Schlotterbeck's goal had stood, McCoist admitted he had got it wrong and instead backed ref Oliver's decision to disallow it.

McCoist told viewers: "The first thing I've got to do is probably apologise to Michael Oliver because it was a block and it was a free kick.

"I got carried away and wanted a goal given.

"But he got it right."

The game had some extra significance for ITV and the audience.

That's because it was the last game that legendary commentator Tyldesley will call for the network.
