Flight LS176 departed the Canary Island shortly after 10pm last night and was due to land in Glasgow at around 1.45am today.

But it was forced to divert to Cork, Ireland, after issuing an emergency alert around 1:30am.

It is understood that a medical emergency was the cause of the diversion.

A passenger on the plane told the Scottish Sun that a woman on the flight had fallen "gravely ill" while in the air and had to be put on oxygen.

The passenger explained that they were told that the aircraft didn't have enough fuel to get from Cork to Glasgow.

The plane eventually touched down at the Scottish airport at 4.30am - almost three hours after it was due to land.

A Jet2 customer said: "Two passengers with medical training had been helping the woman but they felt she needed to be taken to hospital, so the crew diverted with 10 minutes' warning.

"An ambulance arrived and two paramedics took her off the plane, hopefully she is OK.

'"he pilot then explained there wasn't enough fuel to get us to Glasgow, so they had to call in a fuel truck.

"Full credit to the pilot and the crew who did everything to make sure we got home and the lady got the attention she needed."

The airline confirmed that the flight was diverted due to a passenger requiring medical assistance.

A spokesperson for Jet2 said: "We can confirm that flight LS176 from Tenerife to Glasgow diverted to Cork in the early hours of this morning, 3rd July, due to a customer requiring medical assistance.

"The aircraft subsequently departed for Glasgow Airport."
